IICosmic is the name given to the father and son musical
collaboration of Gary and Jason Deatherage.
Based in British Columbia’s beautiful southeastern interior, IICosmic
has been quietly churning out albums for over a decade, as Gary
and Jason finely hone their musical craft in one of the
Kootenays’ finest production facilities, Fort
Cosmos Studios.
Gary Deatherage, the chief songwriter, rhythm guitar
player and singer for IICosmic, is the creative force
behind the band’s material. An accomplished clinical psychologist,
Vietnam veteran and avid song and fiction writer, Gary
brings his considerable life experience deeply into his songs. His solid,
understated rhythm guitar anchors the songs, while his unique voice captures
the listener.
Jason Deatherage, Gary’s only son, just
recently relocated from Victoria BC where he enjoyed a high level of session,
touring and production work with many of the West Coast’s most notable
musical artists. Jason’s 15 years of experience
as a professional musician give IICosmic not only one
of BC’s most well regarded drummers, but also an accomplished producer,
who also contributes the recorded bass and keyboard parts, and acts as
the musical director for the band. Jason builds the songs
from a basic rhythm and vocal part into a larger, fuller sound incorporating
layers of electric guitars and other instruments.
Other fine players contribute their talents to IICosmic’s
recordings, most notably Mark Nicol, whose fiery lead
guitar and background textural stylings combine with Jason’s
careful arranging to help create IICosmic’s signature layered guitar
sound. Aram Masee, a noted West Coast tenor sax player
and keyboard player, has also become an important session player for IICosmic,
providing his considerable talents for the first time on Sorry
About the Heavy Mental Music.
